Bristol technology at heart of shortlisted bid for £30m CVD research prize
With the World Health Organization forecasting an increase in cardiovascular deaths worldwide, the charity’s Big Beat Challenge is a global initiative to galvanise researchers and inspire transformational solutions to tackle the world’s biggest killer. Launched in August 2018, it is a global competition offering a single research award of up to £30million. The BHF challenged researchers to form international, multi-disciplinary teams and submit outline research proposals that would be transformative, with a clear route to patient benefit, and that would only be possible with funding on this scale. The ideas could completely transform the lives of a few or provide a smaller but important change for many. Professor Sir Nilesh Samani, Medical Director at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Heart and circulatory diseases remain the number one cause of death worldwide. We’re taking small steps forward every year but what’s needed is a giant leap, which won’t be achieved by a business-as-usual approach. The Big Beat Challenge embodies our ambition to turbo-charge progress and could lead to its own ‘man on the moon’ moment. I have absolutely no doubt the winning idea will define the decade in their area.” Original source - https://www.bristol.ac.uk/news/2020/january/bhf-shortlist.html University of Bristol, Beacon House Queens Road Bristol, BS8 1QU, UK 0117 928 9000 F95W+9R Bristol Every Mind Matters - campaign to help people think about mental health The campaign Every Mind Matters is encouraging everyone to look after their mental health in the same way they would their physical health. Healthwatch Bristol supports mental health and wellbeing awareness campaigns like this after carrying out a year-long project on how mental health services are working in Bristol. A survey carried out by PHE shows 84 per cent of people in the South West have experienced early signs of poor mental health including anxiety, stress, low mood or trouble sleeping in the past 12 months. Cllr Mike Bell, executive member with responsibility for health in North Somerset, said: "Mental health problems affect around one in four people in any given year - statistically that's around 36,000 people in North Somerset alone. "It's really important we all do what we can to remove the stigma that still exists around mental health and recognise that it's ok not to be ok.
